Wasp nest removal in Enschede: finding the nest
Each spring a single queen starts a small, papery nest made from chewed wood fibre. Only in summer does the colony grow large enough to notice: a steady flight path or a humming sound behind a wall. Wasps like dry, sheltered cavities such as:
- cavity walls, entered through an open weep vent or air brick
- the space under roof tiles and behind fascia boards
- roller-shutter boxes and timber cladding
- sheds and summer houses
- the ground, often in an old hole beneath a flower bed or lawn
The odd wasp at your drink does not mean there is a nest nearby. Wasps that vanish into the same gap again and again certainly do.
Why spraying or blocking it yourself backfires
A can of wasp spray from the DIY shop looks like a quick fix, but it rarely reaches a nest deep inside a cavity wall or under the tiles. What it does do is agitate the colony, which then guards its entrance more fiercely. Sealing or stuffing the hole is just as unwise: the wasps chew a new way out and sometimes emerge indoors through a ceiling spotlight.
What does help: keep windows on that side shut, keep children and pets away from the entrance and make a note of where and when you see the most traffic. If anyone develops breathing difficulties or a swollen face after a sting, call 112 straight away.
How we deal with a wasp problem
We start by looking, not spraying. During the inspection we confirm that we are dealing with wasps rather than bees or hornets, pinpoint the nest and work out how to reach it safely. As with all our pest control in Enschede, we use no more product than the job requires.
Where possible we treat towards the end of the day, when the workers are home. Using an extension lance, we apply the product deep inside the entrance so that it reaches the whole colony. A few wasps will keep coming and going for a while afterwards; that is normal and fades on its own. A treated nest can usually stay where it is.
Bee nest removal in Enschede
Not everything that buzzes is a wasp. Honey bees are browner and hairier and fly more calmly. In spring and early summer a swarm may hang like a large cluster from a branch, fence or wall. Honey bees are not exterminated: a swarm should be collected by a local beekeeper (imker). If bees have moved into a cavity wall or chimney, we look at the options and can point you to a beekeeper.
Bumblebees are best left alone wherever possible. A bumblebee colony in a bird box, under decking or in loft insulation is small, and it dies off naturally at the end of summer. Not sure whether you have a wasp or bee nest? We will tell you during the inspection.
Hornet nest removal in Enschede
The European hornet is the largest native wasp in the Netherlands: reddish brown and yellow, and impressively big. It likes hollow trees, nest boxes and quiet sheds and stays active at dusk. Keep your distance and it is rarely aggressive, but it will defend its nest firmly.
The Asian hornet is a different story. This darker species has an orange face, an almost black abdomen with one striking orange ring, and legs that end in yellow. Its main nest is usually high up in a tree and often only becomes visible once the leaves drop in autumn. Report any sighting on waarneming.nl and never try to reach the nest yourself. A hornet nest at that height is a job for a professional with the right equipment.
Stopping new nests next year
Wasps never reuse a nest. The colony dies in autumn and only the young queens survive the winter, somewhere else. Even so, a new queen often picks the same spot because the entrance is still there. Over the winter, have open weep vents fitted with a proper vent cover so the cavity can still breathe, and have a broken air brick or a gap under a roof tile repaired.
In April and May, check the shed, loft and roller-shutter box for a nest the size of a golf ball; at that stage it is small and quick to deal with. Mice use the same open joints and vents to get indoors in autumn, so see our page on mouse control as well.
